Tranby Aboriginal College

Text Box: Text Box: Tranby Aboriginal College is Australia's oldest Indigenous education provider. They are located in Glebe. A not for profit cooperative which provides the opportunity for Indigenous students from all over the country to undertake nationally accredited Diploma level courses. Tranby provides a learning environment that has a community atmosphere and is respectful of the Indigenous culture and ways of learning. Tranby’s fundamental objective is to guarantee a job or placement in further education for all graduates.

In February, Jawun met with Lindon Coombes the Executive Director of Tranby to specifically discuss the option for Alumni members to engage with the college and students. Jawun has put forward a proposal to Tranby College to kick start a mentoring program pilot. The aim is to provide a mentor to those students who would like to opt in for some additional support and encouragement as they commence their studies—for some this is their first experience of formal education.

We are looking to strike the balance between active mentoring and support for the students whilst utilising the opportunity to develop a more formal mentoring blueprint that Tranby can build into it’s curriculum.

You can find more information about the college on their website: Tranby Aboriginal College

Jawun Committee Member Testimonial

For me the reason that I wanted to participate in the first place was to help in some way, having been on a secondment and met such wonderful people who are so passionate and dedicated and working to achieve such meaningful change I felt really connected in a short space of time and would like to be able to continue to contribute in some way.
